When you stop a GLP-1 tablet, in practice oral semaglutide, it leaves the body gradually, over about 5 to 7 weeks after the last tablet (US tablet label, US label). The tablet registered in Singapore is for type 2 diabetes, so any change is your doctor's decision. At GetLean the exit is planned from the first consultation through the GetLean GLP-1 Taper Plan.
The US labels give an elimination half-life of about one week (US tablet label, US label). The weight figures usually quoted for stopping GLP-1 medication come from injection trials, and they are given here as injection figures.
Oral semaglutide: the same molecule as the weekly semaglutide injection, taken as a tablet once a day.
In Singapore, tirzepatide is registered as Mounjaro, and semaglutide injection as Wegovy for weight management and as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes. The oral tablet is registered as Rybelsus, for type 2 diabetes. The figures in this article are given by molecule, as the trials and product labels report them.
What is known: how long a tablet takes to leave the body
The US label for the tablet used in type 2 diabetes gives an elimination half-life of approximately one week, with semaglutide present in the circulation for about five weeks after the last tablet dose (US tablet label). The US label that covers the 25 mg tablet for weight reduction says about 5 to 7 weeks after the last injectable dose of 2.4 mg or 7.2 mg or oral dose of 25 mg (US label).
So the effect fades over the weeks after the last tablet, as it does after the last injection. Appetite after stopping GLP-1 covers what that means for hunger.
If a tablet dose is missed, the US and European labels say to skip it and take the next dose the following day (US, EU). Longer gaps, and restarting after one, are covered in pausing a GLP-1 is not the same as stopping it.
What is known: the tablet registered in Singapore
Oral semaglutide is registered in Singapore in three strengths, 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg, and its registered indication is type 2 diabetes (HSA register, NDF). The trials of oral semaglutide for weight used 25 mg once daily in OASIS 4 and 50 mg once daily in OASIS 2 (Wharton 2025, Kadowaki 2025), and no oral semaglutide product above 14 mg is on Singapore's register (HSA register). The tablet, and what it is for sets that out, and GLP-1 options without an injection answers the question from the other side.
Which medicine suits a particular person, if any does, is decided by the doctor who assesses them. Where a tablet came from matters too; compounded semaglutide and Telegram sellers covers the risks of unlicensed supply.
What the withdrawal figures cover
They cover injections. In the STEP 1 extension, semaglutide 2.4 mg injection and the trial's lifestyle support stopped on the same day, with no taper, and about two-thirds of the lost weight returned within a year; the group was still 5.6% below its starting weight (Wilding 2022). That describes one injection, at one dose, in one trial group.
On this site it is given as an injection figure and is not applied to the tablet, whose dose and form differ. No weight figure for the weeks after the last tablet is given on this page, because none has been confirmed against a primary source. Individual results vary, and clinical-trial figures describe the populations studied.
How a planned exit works at GetLean
At GetLean, the programme is designed to end: our philosophy is that GLP-1 medication should act as a catalyst — not something to depend on indefinitely. The exit is planned from the first consultation. We favour a gradual reduction under a doctor's guidance rather than a cliff-edge stop, which allows appetite to adjust incrementally, and dose changes are made at the monthly check-in with Dr Quek, each one his decision, towards the lowest effective dose.
What carries on after the dose comes down is built while appetite is quiet, with daily WhatsApp coaching: the eating pattern, protein and the training habit. In a Copenhagen randomised trial that followed adults for a year after treatment ended, those who had combined supervised exercise with a GLP-1 medication were more likely than those who had taken the medication alone to still hold a loss of at least 10% of their starting weight (Jensen 2024). The medication was liraglutide, an earlier GLP-1 medicine, and the initial loss came from a low-calorie diet. Designed to end: planning a GLP-1 exit sets out what the plan contains, and weaning off GLP-1 how a planned taper works.
Thinking of starting, or already taking a tablet with another doctor
If you are thinking of starting, the exit is planned from the first consultation, and which medicine suits you, if any does, is decided at the assessment. You can book your consult and speak to a doctor about whether treatment is suitable.
If you already take a GLP-1 tablet with another doctor, tell us which GLP-1 medication and dose you are currently taking when you book your consult, and bring any recent records to your consultation. Dr Quek confirms whether the programme is suitable for you at your consultation. Nothing is prescribed or dispensed before he has assessed you, and a consultation does not guarantee that a prescription will be issued.
If the tablet was prescribed for type 2 diabetes, decisions about stopping or changing it belong to the doctor managing the diabetes. GetLean is a weight-management programme and does not replace that doctor.
What happens after the taper at GetLean?
Finishing the taper does not have to end the support. After the taper, a patient can keep the daily WhatsApp coaching and the monthly reviews with Dr Quek by continuing the monthly subscription, if they wish. If the weight starts coming back, they can come back to Dr Quek at any time: a restart begins with a review consultation, and whether to restart the medication is his decision at that review.
Individual results vary, and clinical-trial figures describe the populations studied. Never change or stop a prescribed medication on your own — that is a conversation with the doctor who prescribed it. The whole picture is in coming off GLP-1 in Singapore: what happens and how to plan.
Designed to end: a programme whose pace and taper off the medication are planned from the first consult, so the result holds after the medication stops.
Common questions
How long does a GLP-1 tablet stay in your system after the last dose?
The US label for the tablet gives an elimination half-life of approximately one week and says semaglutide is present in the circulation for about five weeks after the last tablet dose (US tablet label). The US label that covers the 25 mg tablet for weight reduction says about 5 to 7 weeks (US label). The effect fades over weeks rather than on the day of the last tablet.
Does the weight come back after stopping a GLP-1 tablet?
The figure usually quoted comes from an injection trial: in the STEP 1 extension, where semaglutide 2.4 mg injection and the trial's lifestyle support stopped on the same day, with no taper, about two-thirds of the lost weight returned within a year (Wilding 2022). It describes that injection in that trial group and is not applied to the tablet. Individual results vary.
Is a GLP-1 tablet registered in Singapore?
Yes. Oral semaglutide is registered in three strengths, 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg (HSA register), and its registered indication is type 2 diabetes (NDF). Which medicine suits a particular person, if any does, is decided by the doctor who assesses them.
Do you need to taper a GLP-1 tablet?
The US labels give no instruction on tapering when stopping, and the withdrawal trials took the medication away, by stopping it or by switching people to placebo. At GetLean we favour a gradual reduction under a doctor's guidance rather than a cliff-edge stop, which allows appetite to adjust incrementally. Any change to a prescribed dose is a decision for the prescribing doctor.
I take a GLP-1 tablet prescribed by another doctor. Can GetLean help me plan coming off?

Dr Quek confirms whether the programme is suitable for you at your consultation, and nothing is prescribed or dispensed before he has assessed you. If the tablet was prescribed for type 2 diabetes, decisions about stopping or changing it belong to the doctor managing the diabetes.
